MEDICAL BILLING AND CODING

Educational Objectives:

 

This program is designed for men and women with or without prior keyboarding skills or previous training in a medical office facility.

 

The objective of the program is to provide the graduate with entry level positions involving front office procedures, medical terms, patient recordkeeping, phone triage, typing and computer applications commonly found in a computerized medical office.  Additionally, the graduate will be prepared for filing insurance forms, billing, procedural and diagnostic coding and delinquent claims.

 

Representative job position titles should include, but would not be limited to Medical Office Administrator, Medical records Coder, Medical billing Specialist, medical Secretary, Medical receptionist, or unit clerk in doctors’ offices, hospitals, insurance companies and other medical patient facilities.

Daytime Program:  480 Clock Hours; 2 Payment Periods; 16 Semester Credit Hours; 20 Weeks

 

Evening Program:   480 Clock Hours; 3 payment Periods; 16 Semester Credit Hours; 30 Weeks

M101 Anatomy                                                                      Credit Hours: 2

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, listen and observe, identify the human body system, define pathology of those systems.  Perform written and oral communications.

 

M102 Terminology                                                                  Credit Hours: 2

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, listen and observe, work as a team member and conduct oneself in a courteous manner.  Evaluate understanding of communication.

 

M103 Front Office Procedures                                                  Credit Hours: 2

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, perform within ethical boundaries, maintain confidentiality, promote the profession, adapt communication to individuals’ ability to understand, recognize and respond to verbal and non-verbal communication, also serve as a liaison between physicians and others, use proper telephone techniques, compose written communications using correct grammar, spelling and format.  The student will also perform basic secretarial skills, schedule and monitor appointments, prepare and maintain medical records.

 

MB110 Medical Office Lab                                                         Credit Hours: 2

 

This course simulates on-the-job environment to help students handle not only the hectic pace often found in an office, but also provides students the reinforcement of all the skills learned.

 

MB120 Typing                                                                              Credit Hours: 2

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, receive, organize, prioritize and transmit information, compose written communication using correct grammar, spelling and format, perform basic secretarial skills, apply computer concepts for office procedures, and perform medical transcription. Students will progressively develop their typing ability and speed through practical exercises, including the preparation of medical reports and health insurance claims.

 

MB130 Computer Applications                                                     Credit Hours: 3

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, receive practice within the scope of education, training and personal capabilities, listen and observe, receive, organize, prioritize and transmit information, use medical terminology appropriately, schedule and monitor appointments, prepare and maintain medical records, apply computer concepts for office procedures, locate resources and information for patients and employees, manage physician’s professional schedule for travel, operate and maintain facilities and equipment safely, exercise efficient time management.  Implement current procedural terminology and ICD-9 coding, analyze and use current third party guidelines for reimbursement, manage accounts receivable, manage accounts payable, maintain records for accounting and banking purposes.

 

MB140 Career Development                                                          Credit Hours: 1

 

Upon completion of this course, the student should project a positive attitude, perform within ethical boundaries, conduct oneself in a courteous and diplomatic manner, show initiative and responsibility, promote the profession, listen and observe, adapt communication to individuals’ ability to understand, recognize and respond to verbal and non-verbal communication, evaluate understanding of communication, interview effectively, and compose written communication using correct grammar, spelling and format.

 

 

MB150 Medical Insurance/Coding                                                  Credit Hours: 2

 

Medical Insurance/Coding prepares students in all aspects of contemporary insurance billing.  Students will learn procedural (CPT-4) and diagnostic (ICD) coding.  Students will also learn to handle delinquent claims and diagnosis-related groups (DRGS).
